What kind of piano, or keyboard, do I need?
You don't need a specific piano or keyboard to learn with Pickup Music.
For the best experience, we recommend using a keyboard or piano with at least 61 keys. This will give you enough range to comfortably follow along with our lessons and play most of the exercises as demonstrated by our instructors.
If you have fewer than 61 keys, no worries! You can still get a lot out of our piano lessons. Depending on the lesson, you may occasionally need to adjust where you play something on your keyboard or work within a smaller range, but you can still follow along and build your skills.
What kind of guitar do I need?
You can learn on either an acoustic or electric guitar.
Some of our beginner classes start on acoustic guitar, and we also offer classes specifically focused on both acoustic and electric guitar. In general, the skills you learn on one can be applied to the other, so you don’t need to own both to get started.
As you progress, you may find that certain techniques are easier or more comfortable on an electric guitar. Techniques like bends, vibrato, and other lead guitar techniques can require less effort on an electric guitar, particularly because of its lighter strings and setup.
Similarly, some classes and styles are naturally more suited to acoustic guitar, especially when focusing on techniques like strumming or fingerstyle.
So in short, either an acoustic or electric guitar will work! You can start with whichever guitar you have and explore instrument-specific classes and techniques as you progress.
What kind of bass do I need?
You don't need a specific type of bass guitar to learn with Pickup Music.
Our lessons are taught on a standard 4-string bass, so this will give you the easiest experience when following along with our instructors.
Have a 5-string or 6-string bass? That works too! You can still follow the lessons. You’ll simply have additional strings that may not be used in the exercises.
Also, you don't need a specific brand, model, or type of bass. Electric basses of different styles will work just fine for learning and practicing the material.
