When you apply the palm area of your picking hand, near your pinky, to the guitar strings and continue to play, you dampen the strings, producing a muted tone. Palm muting is an effective way to deaden or shorten notes. Palm muting technique can be heard with power chords in rock genres like punk and metal as well as with muted single-note parts in funk.
