Optimizing Zoom audio settings for live lessons

Best practices for a clear guitar sound

Updated over 3 weeks ago

If you plan to play guitar during a live lesson, adjusting your Zoom audio settings will improve sound quality and prevent issues.

Below are some suggestions for making sure you're ready to play if selected to participate. We cannot assist with troubleshooting during the live lesson, and we recommended that you test your setup prior to joining.

It's important to keep your Zoom app updated with the most recent version.

Enable "Original sound for musicians"

Zoom is designed to prioritize speech over music, which causes it to suppress guitar. In your audio settings, enable "Original sound for musicians", which will help to remove additional noise suppression.

On Desktop (Mac/Windows)

  1. Open Zoom and go to Settings.

  2. Select Audio from the menu.

  3. Under Microphone:

    • Un-check Automatically adjust microphone volume

    • Set the input volume manually to prevent distortion

  4. Under Audio profile, check:

    • Original sound for musicians

    • Echo cancellation (if necessary)

Note: If you don't see the "Original sound for musicians" option, select "Zoom background noise removal" and set it to "Low".

5. You're not done yet! Close the settings window, then click "Original sound for musicians: Off/On" in the top right corner of your screen to make sure it's activated.

Mobile

Generally, you can't adjust these settings on mobile, so we don't recommend using a mobile device if you plan to play guitar during a live lesson.
